The History of SPCCU Schools Plus Community Credit Union was chartered in 1957 in Pendleton, Oregon, when school employees joined together to start the Umatilla-Morrow Schools Federal Employee Credit Union. Its mission was to serve school employees and their families with their basic financial needs. Bruce Burns was hired as the first manager. Until 1977 when the building on SW 16th was completed, business was conducted in the Burn's kitchen or where ever you could catch Mr. Burns.
In May of 1977, the new building, designed by Sam
Goodwin and Associates, was completed. A new office was opened in June, 1990, and Marlette Homes requested and received membership. Bruce Burns, after 33 years, resigned and was surprised by having the first building named in his honor. In 1991, a merger was completed adding Pendleton Grain Growers Federal Credit Union to the membership. The name Schools Plus was selected to reflect the growing number of small employee groups (SEG) who joined the credit union. Wendy Osgood was hired to replace Bruce Burns upon his retirement. In 1996, a new office was built in Hermiston, Oregon. Shortly after, J.R. Simplot Credit Union merged with Schools Plus adding many more new members in that area. With problems in federal regulations concerning the credit union field of membership, the board of directors requested a change of charter from a federal designation to a state charter. Our name changed from Schools Plus Federal Credit Union to Schools Plus Central Credit Union, now regulated by the State of Oregon.
In 2001, a merger was requested by Western Trails
Federal Credit Union, formerly Pendleton Federal Credit
Union. On the first of October, 2001, after becoming
a state community chartered credit union, the merger
is complete adding several hundred new members. As
a community credit union, Schools Plus now serves
any person who lives or works in Umatilla or Morrow
Counties with offices in Pendleton, Hermiston, and
Milton-Freewater. Future plans call for an office
to be located in Boardman. Growth is happening as
the needs arise. Schools Plus Community Credit Union
is poised to meet that growth and still give the friendly
personal service to all who enter our offices. |
